Three steps, all year

Add gifts as they happen, attach the paper, and the summary builds itself before you file.

1

Record the donation

Money, goods, stock, mileage or an out-of-pocket volunteer cost. A value guide prices donated goods at thrift-store fair market value.

2

Attach the receipt

Snap the receipt or the charity's letter. DeductBook tells you when a gift of $250 or more still needs a written acknowledgment, and when goods over $500 need Form 8283.

3

Hand over the summary

Totals by type, donor and organization, a filing checklist, and a CSV your preparer can open. Every entry shows whether its records are complete.

What you hand your preparer

The tax summary is the point of the whole year. Here is one, with sample data.

What's inside

Every kind of gift

Cash, goods with itemized values, stock with cost basis and holding period, and volunteer mileage and expenses with the rules for what counts applied as you type.

Documentation, named

Each donation shows Records OK, Acknowledgment needed, Receipt needed, or Not eligible, with the reason in plain English. Recorded value and estimated deduction are kept distinct.

One household ledger

Invite your spouse; both of you add donations and receipts to the same records from any device. Simultaneous edits are kept, never silently overwritten.

Coming soon. Today, records stay on your device with backup files to move them.

A value guide with sources

Typical thrift-store ranges for about 130 common items, adjusted by condition, with the IRS rules on appraisals and similar-item aggregation built in.

Why we built it

For years our family tracked charitable gifts in ItsDeductible. When it was discontinued, we went looking for a replacement and didn't find one that covered everything: the cash gifts, the volunteer miles, the receipts and acknowledgment letters that make a deduction hold up, and a way for two people to keep one set of records.

So we built the replacement we wanted, and took the time to make it better than what we'd lost.

Coming from ItsDeductible or a spreadsheet?

  • Start with this year's gifts; the value guide covers the same kinds of items.
  • Your data is yours: export a full backup or a CSV at any time.
  • Restoring from a DeductBook backup file is built in. A spreadsheet importer is on the roadmap.

Questions

Is this tax advice?

No. DeductBook organizes your records and explains the IRS rules in plain English, citing Publication 526 and 561. Confirm deductions with a qualified preparer. It doesn't file returns and doesn't promise a refund.

Where is my data stored?

Without an account, only in your browser; nothing is uploaded. With a household account, in a database and private file storage where access is limited to the people in your household. Either way you can export everything. Details are on the privacy page.

How does household sharing work?

Donations belong to a household, not a person. The owner invites people by email. Members can add and edit; viewers, like an accountant, can only read and export. If two people edit the same donation at once, both versions are kept for you to choose from.

What about volunteer expenses?

Mileage is deductible at 14¢ a mile plus parking and tolls. Supplies, uniforms with no everyday use, and travel away from home on real charity duty count. Your time, local meals, and childcare don't. DeductBook applies these rules as you fill in the form.

Can I import from ItsDeductible?

Not directly yet. You can start with this year's gifts and value items with the same kind of guide. A spreadsheet importer is on the roadmap.
